Abstract:Dystocia, also known as difficult parturition is one of the most common obstetrical problems that occurs when the first or second stage of labor is delayed and external assistance is required for delivery. A case of dystocia in a two-year-old Boerboel bitch weighing 49 kg was presented to the Theriogenology Clinic, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Ibadan with history of delayed and difficult parturition. Upon physical examination by abdominal palpation, presence of puppies and a dilated cervix was observed. Clinical examination showed a rectal temperature of 39°C, heart rate 68 beats per minute and capillary refill time of less than 1 minute. Ultrasound examination further confirmed the presence of viable fetuses. Dystocia was diagnosed due to partial uterine inertia and was managed successfully by digital manipulation and use of exogenous oxytocin.
