Abstract:Antimicrobial activity of methanolic and ethanolic extract of selected chewing sticks; Fagara zanthoxyloides , Distermonanthus benthamianus on bacteria from patients with dental infections. Antimicrobial of chewing stick Extracts were carried out; plates were read for the zone of growth inhibition and the readings were recorded in millimeter. The antimicrobial activity of the tested chewing sticks varies between the two chewing sticks with methanolic and ethanolic extract of Fagara zanthoxyloides showing the highest degree of potency with a range of 7.0mm to 25.0mm and 3.0mm to 14mm respectively, while Distermonanthus benthamianus had zones of inhibition ranging from 0 to 16mm and 0 to 20mm at both methanolic and ethanolic extracts. The study concluded that chewing sticks can be a good alternative to toothbrushes as a means of preventing oral and dental diseases. The chewing stick of Fagara zanthoxyloides is recommended for good oral health because of its high antibacterial activity.
