The Use of Nanotechnology in Food Packaging: A Review

Abstract:The demand for packaged foods with freshness, free from contaminants and extended shelf life is on the rise. In this regard, this review is designed to examine the use and advancement of nanotechnology in food packaging. This technology has been used to produce nanocomposite having unique properties not available in conventional materials. For instance, some metal oxides such as zinc and silver oxides which creates barrier for bacterial, fungal and microbial growths. Another advantage of this technology is the innovation of smart packaging which uses nanosensors capable of detecting changes in food quality such as moisture contents, pH and alterations in temperature to prevent spoilage, retains food quality and extend shelf life.
