The Variation in the Maize Farmers' Seed Sources and their Germination Potentials.

Abstract:The Nigerian Maize Seed Industry has over two hundred improved varieties with different qualitative traits, including high yield, earliness, resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and others, available for farmers' cultivation. Nigeria is Africa's second-largest maize producer after South Africa, with a yield of less than two tonnes per hectare. Farmers' access to quality seeds is essential to boost production and ensure a good turnover on investment. The growth and yield of maize could be improved by high-quality seeds which are significantly affected by seed source. Seed germination is one of the most important components of seed quality. This study was carried out to assess the germination indices of seeds collected from some selected sources in Oyo State. Maize seed samples were collected from different Agro-dealers and local vendors. The experiment was conducted at the Seed Testing Laboratory of the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, Ibadan using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in two replicates.
