Modulatory Effects of Cuban Oregano (Plectranthus ambionicus) on the Intestinal Microbiota of Broiler chickens.

Abstract:Phytogenic feed additives have gained increasing interest as potential replacements for antibiotics in pig production. The effect of Cuban oregano leaf meal (COLM), a plant feed additive, on the intestinal microbiota of broiler chickens was investigated in this study. A total of 240-day-old Arbor Acre plus broiler chickens were randomly allocated into five dietary treatments: T1 - Control (0% COLM), T2 (0.5% COLM), T3 (1% COLM), T4 (1.5% COLM), and T5 (2% COLM). Each treatment was further divided into 6 replicates, consisting of 8 birds per replicate. Four broiler chickens per replicate were selected and slaughtered at the end of the 42-day feeding trial, and the ileal contents were analysed for the Intestinal microbial population using the standard plate count method.
