Abstract:Many university students find it challenging to absorb and remember the information received from lectures, tutorials, practicals, and other platforms in their academic programs. This difficulty in learning reduces their ability to gain a thorough understanding of the subject matter, which could result in their being ill-prepared. The goal of this research is to enhance students' knowledge retention by creating a web-based learning platform that incorporates practice testing, complemented by other techniques such as distributed practice and study groups. First, a review of related literature was carried out on the effectiveness of various learning techniques. The system was then designed using the Angular framework for the front end. Firebase, a reliable platform provided by Google®, was used for database management, user authentication, and hosting. The system was tested at Elizade University, Nigeria and the students’ feedback on their experience with the platform were observed. Students who used the platform were satisfied with the organised vault that provided access to multiple past questions, and the detailed solutions offered by other students. The past question quizzes were preferred to their previous method of rote memorisation. They recommended creating video solutions as well, for past questions and hosting live tutorials to explain these solutions. They also suggested enhancing the quizzes by framing the questions in the context of real- life applications rather than presenting them in an abstract manner. The system provides a platform for accessing answers to past questions and offers a more engaging way to practice past questions, moving away from rote memorization. Additionally, students can access and recommend learning resources to their peers, track their performance and progress in different subjects, and foster a community of students collaborating together to learn. This approach to gamified e-learning has the capability to revolutionize the educational landscape, not only in Nigeria but also across Africa. It offers a platform for positively impacting students’ learning outcomes, overall quality of graduates, and a strong platform for active collaboration across various Institutions of learning.
